Hradec Kralove

It is one of the largest and the most important cities in the Czech Republic.

Hradec Kralove is situated in north-eastern part of the Czech Republic, at the meeting point or rivers Elbe and Orlice. It has 95 thousand inhabitants. Historical sources claim that this it the oldest established Czech city. In the Middle Ages it was a dowry town of the Czech queens. An evidence of its wealth is the Cathedral of Holy Ghost, dating from the 14th century. Next to it there is the White Tower, dating from the 16th century. During the reign of Maria Theresa and Joseph II, the city was converted into stronghold. After the walls had been demolished, the city was converted into modern style.
Today it delights mainly with its modern, 20th-century architecture. The credit for this goes to great architects, the best among which are Jan Kotera (building of the Eastern Czech Museum), and Josef Gocar (J.K. Tyl’s Gymnasium).
The partnership agreement between Hradec Kralove and Wroclaw was signed in 2003. Hradec Kralove hosts numerous festivals, such as the Theatre Festival of European Regions, Jazz Goes to Town.
